Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (1)

Mortal Kombat 1 is the continuity for the long-running fighting game franchise, making it the perfect entry for players new to the series.

In MK1, many fan-favourite characters have made a return as reimagined versions after a long period of absence from the series.

The game is continuously being updated with additional downloadable characters, featuring guest appearances from popular franchises.

Without further ado, here's a look at the 32 Mortal Kombat 1 characters and 20 Kameos.

What Playable Characters are there in Mortal Kombat 1?

Liu Kang - Fire God

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (2)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Geras & the Elder Gods

Fighting Styles: Jeet Kune Do, Choy Lay Fut, Dragon

Liu Kang is a staple Mortal Kombat character, having been in all but one Mortal Kombat game. A Shaolin Monk hailing from Earthrealm, Liu Kang was one of the original fighters that Raiden recruited to fight in the Mortal Kombat tournament in the first game and was the one who defeated Shang Tsung to save Earthrealm and win the tournament.

In Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang absorbed Raiden's Elder God powers, turning himself into the Fire God Liu Kang. With this power, he defeated Kronika and became the keeper of time, using this power to reset the Universe and begin the setting of Mortal Kombat 1. He will have to learn to master his newfound powers in order to save Earthrealm and all of reality in this new Mortal Kombat storyline.

Sub-Zero - Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (3)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Lin Kuei

Fighting Styles: Ninjitsu, Shotokan, Dragon

Sub-Zero is even more prolific than Liu Kang, having appeared in every single Mortal Kombat game. As a long-standing Mortal Kombat character, he is perhaps the most recognisable figure to have come from the games, with an iconic blue outfit, mask and ice-related abilities.

In the rebooted universe, Sub-Zero (aka Bi-Hand) leads the warriors of the Lin Kuei, a warrior clan whose mission is to protect Earthrealm from any and all threats. However, after generations of peace, the Lin Kuei have relaxed their duties, leaving the realm vulnerable to attack. Bi-Han will have to lead the Lin Kuei back to strength in order to combat a new threat.

Scorpion - Lin Kuei Warrior

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (4)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Lin Kuei

Fighting Styles: Hapkido, Pi Gua, Moi Fah

Throughout the history of the Mortal Kombat games, Scorpion and Sub-Zero have been bitter rivals of opposing clans, furiously battling one another to the death. Almost as prolific as his arch enemy, Scorpion (or Hanzo Hasashi) is another instantly recognizable Mortal Kombat character. He is known for his yellow colour scheme, kunai attacks and skeletal form.

In the new timeline, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are brothers and both members of the Lin Kuei. Here, they work together to protect Earthrealm from any threats to the long-standing peace. However, trouble is brewing between the pair as Sub-Zero's rejection of tradition is at odds with Scorpion's dedication. How far will the brothers go to uphold their beliefs?

Kitana - Princess of Outworld

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (5)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Edenia

Allegiance: Mileena, Sindel, Outworld

Fighting Styles: Tessenjutsu, Eagle Claw, Ba Gua

Kitana, the Princess of Outworld is one of the most iconic female Mortal Kombat characters. In the original timeline, she was the adopted daughter of Shao Khan, the ruler of Outworld. Originally loyal to the realm, she later aided the Earthrealm defenders and fell in love with Liu Kang. However, she met her end at the hands of her resurrected mother, Sindel.

In Mortal Kombat 1, Kitana is still Princess of Outworld, however, here she is dedicated to the protection of her sister and Heir of the realm, Mileena. While many call for the level-headed Kitana to usurp her sister as heir of Outworld, Kitana has so far rejected these calls, protecting her Mileena against any who would oppose her reign. After Mileena was plagued with Tarkat, her main mission is to rid her sister of this disease.

Johnny Cage - Hollywood Action Star

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (6)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Earthrealm

Fighting Styles: Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Shorin Ryu

Johnny Cage came to the foreground of the franchise back in the very first instalment. As an arrogant actor but extremely talented martial artist, he proved his worth to Earthrealm when he defeated Goro, the half-dragon, half-man Shokan. He later fell in love with fellow Earthrealm defender Sonya Blade and helped begin a new generation of defenders.

Johnny Cage's Mortal Kombat 1 iteration retains much of his character from previous entries. Still an egotistical Hollywood actor and martial artist, his fame has long since faded. Now in danger of being forgotten by the masses, he joins Liu Kang in defending Earthrealm, not out of duty, but for his own gains, hoping to restore some of his former fame.

Kenshi Takahashi - Yakuza

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (7)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Shirai Ryu & Earthrealm

Fighting Styles: Kenjutsu, Tai Chi, San Shou, Judo

First appearing in Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, Kenshi is a later addition to the Mortal Kombat roster, but is still loved by fans. Originally, he was a blind swordsman with great telekinetic power. Later, he would father a son, Takeda, who would become a defender of Earthrealm in his own right.

The Mortal Kombat 1 character of Kenshi has a somewhat less noble start. Kenshi is descended from an ancient family of noble warriors who found themselves decimated and in their moment of weakness joined the Yakuza. Centuries later, he is now a reluctant member of the organisation, looking to break free from its hold and restore his family's honour by reclaiming their prized sword, Sento.

Kung Lao - Farmer Turned Fighter

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (8)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Earthrealm, Raiden & Liu Kang

Fighting Styles: Mantis, Shaolin Fist, White Lotus, Wing Chun

Kung Lao, a Shaolin Monk of great ability, has always been somewhat of a foil to Liu Kang. Trained together, Kung Lao has always been brash and arrogant whereas Liu Kang is measured and selfless. In the original timeline, the end came for Kung Lao when the Evil Shao Khan snapped his neck suddenly and dishonourably during a Mortal Kombat tournament in Outworld.

No longer is Kung Lao a Shaolin warrior. Instead, in MK1 he is a farmer who has spent his life toiling the fields of his home, all the while dreaming of a much greater destiny for himself. He gets his chance when Liu Kang comes to him, asking him to join the Earthrealm warriors. This is Kung Lao's opportunity to forget his humble beginnings and make a name for himself as a legend.

Mileena - Heir of Outworld

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (9)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Outworld, Sindel & Kitana

Fighting Styles: Saijutsu, Ying Yeung, Mian Chuan

Mileena joined the Mortal Kombat roster in Mortal Kombat 2. Almost overnight she became an icon of the series, known for her razor-sharp teeth and brutal fatalities. She was revealed to be an experiment by Shao Khan to clone Kitana and create a new heir to the throne of Outworld. She eventually inherited this role, however, was usurped by Kotal Khan and later killed by D'Vorah.

In the new timeline, she is Kitana's older twin sister and rightful heir to the throne of Outworld. However, she remains impulsive and reckless, causing many to support her sister for the throne instead. But her fiercest struggle is that she is infected with the Tarkat disease, information that if it became public, could collapse her bid for rulership.

Raiden - Champion of Earthrealm

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (10)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Earthrealm, Liu Kang & Kung Lao

Fighting Styles: Nan Chuan, Jujutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Shaolin Fist

Another iconic character to have been born from the Mortal Kombat series, Raiden has long led the defenders of Earthrealm. An Elder God, he has the power to call upon lightning powers, giving him an edge in battle over his opponents. He is well known for his wisdom and dedication to Earthrealm, even if he has made costly mistakes in the past.

The new Mortal Kombat character of Raiden is no longer an Elder God, but a simple man who tends to his fields to provide for his family. However, his world is shaken when he is called upon by Liu Kang to join the defence of Earthrealm. He now has a tough choice to make, leave his family and fight, or stay and continue the quiet life.

Rain - High Mage of Outworld

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (11)

First Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Outworld

Fighting Styles: Zi Ran Men, Bojutsu

An arrogant and forthright Edenian Prince, Rain is rarely concerned with the struggles between Outworld and Earthrealm. Instead, he focuses on his own ambitions, hoping to become a ruler of Outworld. He supported Mileena's attempts to become the Empress of the land which ultimately failed. Being a demi-god, he has the power to control water.

The MK1 version of Rain is a student of magic at Outworld's Imperial Academy of Sorcery. Here, he has gained a reputation for his amazing abilities around water magic, something he can control with near-limitless effects. His ambition pushes him even further, however, and now he turns his attention to more powerful and more dangerous sorcery.

Smoke - Master of Stealth

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (12)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Lin Kuei

Fighting Styles: Mi Tzu, Ninjitsu

First appearing as a secret character in Mortal Kombat 2, Smoke first appeared as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 3. Here, he was depicted as a cyborg, having been transformed along with many other members of the Lin Kuei clan of which he was a part.

Smoke (aka Tomas Vrbada)in MK1 is an adopted member of the Lin Kuei. An orphan, his family was killed by the same clan he is now a part of after trespassing onto their grounds. Ashamed, the Grandmaster took him in and raised him alongside Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Here, he has mastered magic in order to enhance his considerable stealth and fighting abilities which he will have to put to the test in Earthrealm's defence.

Li Mei - First Constable of Outworld

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (13)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Outworld

Fighting Styles: Baji Quan, Lui He Ba Fa, Mi Zong

A resident of Outworld, Li Mei fought for the freedom of her people from the tyranny of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in the original timeline. Since the events of Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, she has had very small roles in the Mortal Kombat games but is still popular with fans of the series.

Mortal Kombat 1 throws Li Mei back into the limelight. In this timeline, she was once a member of the Umgadi, tasked with protecting the royal family of Outworld. She left in disgrace after a terrible tragedy, however, joining the police force of Sun Do, Outworld's capital. She is now the capital's chief guardian, and looking for a way to redeem herself for her past dishonour.

Baraka - Defender of the Tarkatans

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (14)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Neutral

Fighting Styles: Silat, Hung Gar

One of the most striking characters of the Mortal Kombat universe, Baraka is one of the better-known villains of the series, with deadly blades and razor-sharp teeth. He was the leader of the Tarkatan people, often siding with whoever could provide the best treatment for him and his people.

Mortal Kombat 1 reimagines this classic character as once being a powerful merchant in Outworld. However, after contracting the Tarkat plague, he was transformed from man into monster. Ravaged by the plague, Baraka now lives in a colony of others affected by the disease. He has dedicated himself to bettering his people's lives, fighting for their wellbeing.

Tanya - Outworld Guardian

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (15)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 4 (1997)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Outworld

Fighting Styles: Zi Ran Men, Yue Chuan, Bojutsu

A henchwoman to the villains of the series, Tanya serves her own causes more than that of those around her. A noble of Edenia, her decisions are made based on what will keep her alive, causing her to have sided with Shao Khan, Mileena and the Deadly Alliance in the past.

Tanya has a more honourable presentation in MK1, being a member of the Umgadi, the royal guard of Outworld. Having excelled in her duties, she is now the leader of the royal family's personal guard, a position of great honour and respect. Her responsibilities come with restrictions, however, committing her to a life of piety and chastity. This will be tested as her bond with Mileena grows stranger, threatening her livelihood.

Geras - Guardian of the Hourglass

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (16)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 11 (2019)

Realm: Netherrealm

Allegiance: Earthrealm & Liu Kang

Fighting Styles: Wrestling

One of the characters introduced in Mortal Kombat 11, Geras was an artificial construct created by Kornika to aid her manipulation of time. He proved a formidable opponent to the defenders of Earthrealm, able to reconstruct himself after what would usually be fatal levels of damage or injury. He was eventually stopped by being thrown into the never-ending Sea of Blood, where he would fall for eternity.

Returning in Mortal Kombat 1, Geras is now on the side of the Earthrealm defenders and is loyal to Liu Kang. In charge of guarding the Hourglass of Time, it is his duty to defend the very fabric of time from all who would try to destroy it.

Reptile - Shapeshifter

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (17)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Neutral

Fighting Styles: Crab, Pao Chui, Leopard

Long-time fan favourite of the series, Reptile (or Syzoth), returns in Mortal Kombat 1. He appeared in the very first Mortal Kombat game, where he could be fought as a secret boss if the players had the skills to get a double flawless victory on the right stage. He later became a stalwart companion to Shao Khan.

In Mortal Kombat 1, Reptile is back with a new and expanded backstory. Here, he appears as one of three "banished" characters, who have been rejected by their cultures. With the ability to shapeshift into human form, he was ostracised by the community and now finds himself caught in the struggle between worlds.

Ashrah - Netherrealm Demon

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (18)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004)

Realm: Netherrealm

Allegiance: Neutral

Fighting Styles: Chou Jaio, Silat

Appearing a little later in the series in Mortal Kombat: Deception, Ashrah is a resident of the Netherrealm, the land of the dead run by the evil Quan-Chi. While she appears as a human woman, she is actually a demon, with conflicting loyalties. Sometimes she rejects her demon heritage and fights for good, while on other occasions she accepts her origins.

Mortal Kombat 1 sees Ashrah return, this time having fully rejected her demon origins. As a result, she appears almost completely human and will join the Earthrealm defenders in their battle against evil. Looking to redeem her past life and affiliations, will she be able to find the absolution that she craves?

Havik - Agent of Chaos

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (19)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Deception (2004)

Realm: Chaosrealm

Allegiance: None

Fighting Styles: Snake, Wing Chun

Also appearing in Mortal Kombat: Deception for the first time, Havik hails from the Chaosrealm, a lesser-known and anarchic land in the Mortal Kombat universe. A complicated character, he is not allied to evil as many other antagonistic forces, but simply serves to spread chaos throughout the land and oppose the forces of order.

Making a dramatic return, very little is known about how Havik fits into the events of the timeline. Where will this popular but lesser-known Mortal Kombat character fit into the new world created by Liu Kang?

Sindel - Empress of Outworld

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (20)

First Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Outworld

Fighting Styles: Zha Chuan, Fu Jow Pai

With her striking silver hair and purple colour scheme, Sindel made a splash when she arrived in Mortal Kombat 3. The mother of Kitana, Sindel was originally a benevolent Queen from the realm of Edenia. Later in the timeline, she turned down a darker path, embracing her role as Empress of Outworld and falling in love unquestionably with Emperor Shao Khan.

In the new timeline, Sindel still has the title of Empress, having assumed total control after her husband Jerrod was murdered. Now, her grip on Outworld is being sorely tested, as many challengers try to stake their claim for the throne. Will Sindel have the strength to restore peace and order to her realm, or will the challengers who vie for her kingdom prevail?

General Shao - Supreme Commander of Outworld's Army

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (21)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Self-aligned

Fighting Styles: Tai Tzu, Lui He

Perhaps the most beloved villain in the entire Mortal Kombat series, Shao Khan is a forceful Emperor with an iron grip on his realm. His first appearance wasn't until the second game, where he served as the final boss, a role he would assume in many games that followed. Throughout the series, Shao Khan has proved the most formidable opponent to the Earthrealm champions, being responsible for many of their deaths.

However, in Mortal Kombat 1 he starts as a general, not Emperor as we have so often seen him before. This could all change however. The perfect soldier, unparalleled on the field and a tactical genius, General Shao had a poor start to life. Born to a noble military family, he was frail and weak in his youth. Enraged, his father put him through a gruelling regime that would turn Shao into a colossus of a physical specimen, unmatched in his prowess. While brilliant, General Shao's loyalties lie with Outworld, not the current Empress, which could lead him on a dangerous path.

Shang Tsung - Sorcerer Supreme

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (22)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat (1992)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: Damashi & Quan Chi

Fighting Styles: Mimicry, Snake Kung Fu, Crane

Shang Tsung is one of the longest-running villains of the Mortal Kombat universe. He was the final antagonist of the original game, where he was eventually defeated by Liu Kang. Since then, he has often returned to threaten Earthrealm, always using deception and cunning to further his own purposes.

Shang Tsung is available as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1 to those who pre-ordered the game. He's also available to purchase in-game.

Reiko - General Shao's Lieutenant

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (23)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat 4 (1997)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: General Shao

Fighting Styles: Mixed Martial Arts

Known as General Shao's loyal minion, Reiko made his debut in Mortal Kombat 4. Initially portrayed as more of a ninja, Reiko has evolved over the series. In MK1, he is depicted as a ferocious brawler who will stop at nothing to appease his master, General Shao. However, Reiko is more than meets the eye, as his ambitions grow larger. Will he be able to fulfil his desire to rule the Outworld?

Nitara - Heroine of Vaeternus

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (24)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: None

Fighting Styles: Leopard, Fu Jow Pai

Nitara hails from one of the most mysterious realms: Vaeternus. Having made her first appearance in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Nitara quickly became a fan favourite with her demonic-like appearance and vampiric features. To sustain her immortality, she feeds on her victim's blood.

In Mortal Kombat 1's timeline, Nitara serves alongside Quan Chi, not because of loyalty but because of mutual benefit. Her goal has always been to free her realm from its ties to Outworld. But will she be able to liberate her people?

Kombat Pack Characters

Post-launch, Mortal Kombat 1 has had more characters added to its roster over time. This includes guest characters from other popular properties and franchises outside of the Mortal Kombat universe. These characters are available through downloadable content known as Kombat Packs.

The first Kombat Pack includes the following playable characters:

Omni-Man - Viltrumite Warrior

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (25)

Realm: Viltrum

Allegiance: Self-aligned

Known as Nolan Grayson, Omni-Man hails from Viltrum sent on a mission by the Viltrumite Empire to conquer Earth. However, the Empire's ambitions don't stop there; Earthrealm is next, and so are all the other realms.

Voiced by JK Simmons, Omni-Man was a highly anticipated guest fighter, and the first addition to the roster from the Kombat Pack.

In the game, Omni-Man boasts powerful abilities that enable him to juggle his opponents for long periods of time. With his Viltrumite Stance, he can dodge projectiles while preparing to unleash devastating combos. His high damage and mobility make for a dynamic character that cannot be stopped once he gets going.

Quan Chi - Netherrealm Necromancer

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (26)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997)

Release date: 14 December 2023

Realm: Netherrealm

Allegiance: Damashi & Shang Tsung

Quan Chi is one of the oldest antagonists of the franchise, alongside Shang Tsung, making his first playable appearance in MK4. A wielder of Necromantic magic, Quan Chi has always opposed Earthrealm and the Outworld.

In the new timeline, the Necromancer was kept on the sidelines by Liu Kang in an attempt to restore order to the realms. However, after being visited by Damashi, Quan Chi becomes a powerful mage, joining Shang Tsung's evil plans to dominate the realms.

Peacemaker - Extreme Patriot

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (27)

Release date: 28 February 2024

Peacemaker (aka Christopher Smith), is a brutal vigilante that will stop evil at any cost. Known for his participation in the Suicide Squad, he will ensure the peace is kept even if it means obliterating anyone who might interfere with it.

Ermac - Collection of Souls

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (28)

First Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Release date: 16 April 2024

Realm: Outworld

Allegiance: None

Ermac is one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, and he's back as the third DLC character in MK1. He first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3, and historically served Shao Khan and later Kotal Khan. This construct of souls strikes fear into his opponents with his telekinetic abilities.

In the MK1 timeline, he is summoned by Quan Chi's dark magic and serves as his minion to stop any attempts to quelch Quan Chi's evil plans.

Homelander - Leader of the Seven

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (29)

Release date: 4 June 2024

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Self-aligned

Homelander (aka John Gilman) is an antagonist and fifth guest fighter in Mortal Kombat 1. Not much is known about how he weaves into the universe, but one thing's for sure - he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even if it means the destruction of every realm.

Takeda - The Shirai Ryu Prodigy

Mortal Kombat 1 Characters & Roster (30)

First Appearance: Mortal Kombat X (2015)

Release date: 23 July 2024

Realm: Earthrealm

Allegiance: Shirai Ryu (formerly Yakuza)

Takeda is the final guest fighter in MK1 Kombat Pack 1, and a highly anticipated character to join the roster.

Takeda made his first appearance in Mortal Kombat X (2015), appearing as Kenshi's son, hailing from Thailand. Following his mother's demise, Takeda was soon taken in and transformed into a formidabble warrior by Scorpion (Hanzo Hasashi).

In the new timeline Takeda is now Kenshi's cousin, and like him, is also a former member of the Yakuza. Although Kenshi moves on to fight for Earthrealm, Takeda remained loyal to the organised crime gang, relishing in the criminal lifestyle. In light of this, Takeda is issued to take down his cousin for defecting. Upon attempting to bring his cousin down, Takeda is mortally wounded, whereby Kenshi decides to take him to the Shirai Ryu to save him. Once fully recovered, Takeda was refused dismissal, as Kenshi feared he would be slain by the Yakuza for failing his mission. Over time, the former gang member grows fond of the Shirai Ryu and takes up a vow to fight against the Underworld and protect Earthrealm alongside his cousin.

As a youngling, she learned the craft of her father, a Master Armourer, and eventually assumed his role. Equipped with her mother's combat prowess and her father's forging skills, she became a fierce kombatant. Upon recognising her talents, Sub-Zero entrusted her as his lieutenant, sharing his ambitious vision to evolve the Lin Kuei.
