Lucy Dacus, the indie darling known for her poignant lyrics and captivating stage presence, recently graced the Jimmy Kimmel Live! stage, but this time, she brought more than just her music. She not only performed her song "Best Guess" but also officiated weddings for several couples! It's a heartwarming blend of art and life, and it's a story that deserves a closer look.
On October 9th, Dacus returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, treating viewers to a performance of "Best Guess" from her album Forever Is a Feeling. But that wasn't all! The singer-songwriter also stepped into the role of a wedding officiant, creating a unique and memorable experience for both the couples and the audience. You can even watch a replay of the performance.
But here's where it gets interesting: Dacus has been incorporating weddings into her performances throughout her recent tour. During a set at All Things Go NYC, she officiated the marriage of nine couples onstage. This act has sparked conversations about the intersection of art, personal beliefs, and social issues.
In an interview with The New York Times, Dacus shared that she's aware of the sensitive nature of officiating weddings, especially considering the current debates surrounding marriage rights. She acknowledges the weight of the moment, recognizing that the act of marriage can be seen differently by different people.
"Best Guess," the song, is a reflection on the uncertainties of life and relationships. Dacus explained that the song is about accepting the unpredictability of the future and making the best choices you can. Interestingly, she also shared how this song has evolved her understanding of relationships. She mentioned that embracing the idea of divorce has brought her closer to the idea of marriage itself. (And, for those who didn't know, Dacus is in a relationship with her bandmate, Julien Baker!).
And this is the part most people miss: "Best Guess (wedding version)" is featured on Forever Is a Feeling: The Archives, a newly released expanded version of Dacus' album. This collection includes demos, live recordings, and previously unreleased tracks, such as "Losing" and a cover of Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle.”
The digital tracklist for Forever Is a Feeling: The Archives includes two discs with a variety of tracks, while the vinyl version offers a curated selection.
As for what's next, Dacus is set to close out 2025 with appearances at the New Yorker Festival and Mexico City’s Corona Capital, followed by a handful of dates supporting Billie Eilish. She'll then head back on the road in February 2026 for a tour of New Zealand and Australia.
