What Makes This Recipe Great

Making your own taco spice mix is so simple! There is no need to use the store-bought taco seasonings, which are filled with sugar, fillers, preservatives, and the sneaky “natural flavors” I try to avoid.

When making spice mixes, using organic spices is much healthier. Organic spices are pasteurized via steam to kill bacteria, so they are safest to eat and 100% nontoxic. Spices that are not organic are pasteurized with chemicals, and ethylene oxide gas remains in them, which is why I opt for organic.

Instead, make your Keto Taco Seasoning right at home with 6 simple organic spices you might already have on hand! Then your taco seasoning will be toxin-free, keto, gluten-free, paleo, and whole30 compliant!

Ingredient Notes

Making your own homemade taco seasoning is so easy. You just need 6 simple ingredients. The thing I love about making your own spice blends is that you can customize them to your own taste. Does it need more spice? Throw in a pinch of cayenne pepper. Not cooking with diced onions? Throw in some onion powder. Add in salt and black pepper as desired.

Serving Size & Tips

  • 2 tablespoons of this homemade low carb taco seasoning is the equivalent of those Mexican taco seasonings packets you can buy in the store.
  • For 1 pound of ground beef or ground chicken, you’ll add 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning and ¼ cup water, just like the packet. You can opt to skip the water if desired. It tastes delicious on veggies, too! If you’re making more pounds of meat, use 2 tbsp per pound as the ratio.
  • Use this seasoning blend in your choice of meat for taco night or other Mexican recipes like a burrito bowl, low carb taco salad, taco soup, enchiladas, taco casserole, vegetables, and more!
  • There are about 3 g net carbs per 2 tablespoons of this seasoning blend, which is perfect for the keto lifestyle.

Storage Tips

Spices last a long time! Your taco seasoning will last for up to four years. But because it is so good, you’ll definitely use it all up before then.

To keep it freshest, store in an airtight container. I love using my 4-ounce mason jars; they’re the perfect size for the amount of seasoning this makes!

This recipe is perfect! If I can’t find smoked paprika, I’ve substituted with chipotle – adds a tiny bit of warmth and just the right zing!

I am so glad you liked my taco seasoning Nancy. Isn’t it amazing how we just get in the habit of buying something when we can make it ourselves? It’s usually better for you, healthier, less expensive, plus it’s a lot of fun! So happy you enjoyed it.
